Bill Carlton, a fearless Portlander, is perhaps one of the greatest players of videogames alive. A coin-op enthusiast, he’s set multiple records, playing twenty-seven plus hours of Asteroids in an attempt to defeat a long-standing record, only to have it end in heartbreak. Now he’s set his sights on Missile Command (you know, the one with the little cities that you protect by stopping incoming missiles and making the blinkies go off?) High Score follows Bill as he attempts to take down the Atari classic and its twenty year-old record. To beat the 80 million point score, he'll have to play the game—on one quarter—for approximately fifty-six hours.

There’s a certain edge to Bill’s countenance, a checked frustration with the world. His objective is an attempt, if you will, to seek the truth and finality of historical record. At first, his nonchalance warms him to the viewer, but as he suffers the slings and arrows of playing an aging game, things change course. As anyone who has gone to bed dreaming of the monsters within the walls of Doom can attest, you get pretty fucked up by a few hours of solid gaming. Our Bill plays for tens of hours straight.

He may not be an athlete, but Bill definitely has an ungodly determination, and this documentary, a highlight of the festival, will prove that, well, he’s just too good for the machine. – Alex Smith

Premiere: World
Length: 3mins

In this program, we’ve chosen to include beautifully inanimate objects, including this chair, the star of this short-short. An educational film for the “Netscape Age,” this one comes highly recommended for a laugh, and we can guarantee it in most states. -Alex Smith
